Priority of my financial & personal investment made so far based on investment advisors & experts advice
Here are some of the financial & personal investments that I prioritized when I started earning

  1.  Investing in oneself (Health &; Education)
  2.  Health Insurance
  3. Life Insurance
  4. Mutual Funds & Stocks
  5.  Gold
  6. Real estate

Investing in oneself:

  •  Best investment one can ever make is investment in own self.
  • This includes investment in health (food & workout), in educating oneself (professional diploma/degree& books).
  • Paying for my post-graduation and investing in my passion took away a major chunk especially duringearly years of earnin

Health insurance

  • Health insurance in layman terms is a type of insurance that covers medical expenses during an accident or illness in return of the premium paid to the insurance company
  • Personally having met with an accident I cannot stop harping on the importance of a good Health

Insurance.

  • Life Insurance
  • Life is extremely unpredictable &; comes with its ups &; downs. Therefore investing in a Life insurance is extremely important for the dependents those who get the insured amount in case of the insurers death.
  • Using an expert advice really helps in choosing the right insurance

Mutual Funds:

  • After the insurances comes the more interesting category of investment i.e Mutual funds.
  • A mutual fund is a company that pools money from many investors and invests the money in securities such as stocks, bonds, and short-term debt. The combined holdings of the mutual fund are known as its portfolio. Investors buy shares in mutual funds.
  • Mutual fund is a smart way to invest in equities &; bonds if one does not have the bandwidth to understand &; invest directly in equities &; bonds
  • There are multiple types & categories of funds including:
    • Multi Cap Funds
    • Tax Savings
    • Large Cap
    • Midcap & Smallcap
    •  Debt
    • Hybrid
    • Liquid and Gilt
  • Based on the age, financial condition, risk appetite one can choose a mix of schemes.
  • On the recommendation of my investment advisor, I started my investment journey with investment in ELSS for tax saving purpose but gave me phenomenal returns in the long run.
  • The expert suggested that investment can either be done in SIP (Systematic Investment Plan) or lumpsum.” He further added, “ on a bad day (when markets have seen good correction a lumpsum investment tends to give solid returns”

Equities, bonds, exchange traded funds:

  • If one has inclination and time to study stocks, bonds &; exchange traded funds investment can be made directly made into them.
  • Amongst all the above, for me and lot of millennials equities is one of the most fascinating asset class in especially in today’s time as the business environment is pretty dynamic, the asset class is liquid and the average returns of the indices over the last couple of decades is higher than average return of other asset classes.
  • However, investing in equities is a time consuming task that needs thorough understanding of markets and time to monitor the investments. So sticking to expert advice works well especially in the initial investing phase.

Gold

  • Gold is one of the oldest and most reliable precious metal to invest in globally.
  • With stable returns over decades it is one of the best hedge against inflation.
  • It is bought by not only individuals but also by the central banks of countries as an important part of its reserves.
  • Being an Indian I couldn’t help but buy gold. I have made small investments in gold both physical and in Sovereign Gold Bonds recently!

Real Estate

  • Investing in real estate can be an interesting &; lucrative investment option.
  • Real estate investment can be done either in residential or commercial property with rental income as an important source of income apart from appreciation in property.
  • Apart from directly buying &; owning the land/property one can invest in real estate through Real Estate

Investment Trust (REIT) or recently launched online platforms offering fractional ownership of
property.

  • I am yet to buy a home for myself but I find listed new instruments like REIT &; fractional ownership of property an interesting way of investment in real estate!

We will discuss each of the asset in detail in our subsequent articles.
